21 Nov CRUELTY-FREE AND VEGAN BEAUTY

Written by Cat Woods ・ 5 mins

Ultimately, cruelty-free beauty means that products are not tested on animals. Vegan beauty means products are entirely free of animal-derived product and any testing on animals. This means that all vegan products are cruelty-free by default but not all cruelty-free products are vegan.

Thanks to the plant-based trend and the skyrocketing number of Australians identifying as vegan, there’s been real growth in the number and diversity of beauty brands identifying as vegan and cruelty-free. Grand View Research reports that the vegan beauty industry is predicted to reach $US21 billion in value by 2025. No wonder brands including Covergirl and Australis are ensuring their vegan offerings far outnumber the products that aren’t vegan. Both major brands are certified cruelty free.

Here’s an intro to beauty brands that are either vegan or cruelty-free. If you have more suggestions, let us know on Facebook.

Nude By Nature makeup

Nude By Nature

Australia’s most popular mineral makeup brand, Nude By Nature makeup is designed for sensitive and blemish-prone skin ideally. Mineral makeup enables the skin to breathe while avoiding the chemical ingredients that can clog pores and cause allergic reactions.  Considering that women are estimated to swallow up to a 1g of lipstick annually just be licking their lips or eating while wearing lipstick, it makes sense that you’d want your lipstick to be 100% toxin-free too. Nude By Nature is PETA certified cruelty-free. Their products are entirely made of natural ingredients. Not 100% vegan.

Kat Von D Shade Light

Kat Von D Beauty

Has anyone not heard of Kat Von D by now? The famous American tattoo artist-TV reality star-makeup entrepreneur is omnipresent in American media and has used her platform as a celebrity to champion vegan living. Until the past few years, those who had discovered her makeup line via social media had to go overseas or send a minion if they wanted any of it. Now, it’s at Sephora. Bless. If you’re new to the brand, look for the Shade & Light palette which combines customisable highlighters, blush and bronzer. The studded lipstick bullets are a collector’s dream.

Inika makeup

INIKA

This Australian brand is all about organic beauty from skincare through to a thorough collection of makeup products. It’s Certified Organic, Halal, cruelty-free and also Certified Vegan.
