Written by Maud Ledger
You hear so many precious words of wisdom from your yoga teachers in class; their words can really transform not only your practice that day, your day off the mat, but also your life. These words can make you want to go deeper into the understanding of the higher self.
We have compiled a list of books that can help you understand yourself better and to live a happier and healthier life following ancient yogic wisdom. Happy reading!
If you want a modern approach to ancient wisdom
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz – I read this book 10 years ago, it was given to me by one of those everyday angels who passes a book to you knowing there is the exact bit of wisdom you need it in. This book is the most accessible of this list and a very practical approach to yogic philosophy, introducing four agreements to make with yourself that will give you the momentum you want in life!
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle – A book to have on the bedside table for the nights you feel unsure and stuck in your own mind. Eckhart Tolle shares very potent knowledge about living in the most powerful time: the present. Expect to have many ‘ah-ah moments’ reading the book.
Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One by Dr Dispenza – With some very scientific arguments, this book explains how the way you think shapes your reality.
Ancient Wisdom for Modern Health by Mark Bunn – A wonderful book for those who aspire to live a vibrant, holistic life. From the book, you will receive plenty of practical advice and tools (from herbs to lifestyle routines) to be a healthier version of yourself.
The Golden Sequence by Jonni Pollard – Founder and main teacher of ‘One Giant Mind’ (a meditation app), Jonni recently released this book, which gathers together years of knowledge and techniques from the Vedic traditions and philosophies, to help anyone reclaim their power to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
If you want to dive in deep
The Four Desires: Creating a Life of Purpose, Happiness, Prosperity, and Freedom by Rod Stryker – As one of the most internationally acclaimed yoga teachers, this book is a must read! It gives clues on the four ultimate goals of life and a modern explanation of the ancient Samkhya Philosophy.
Yoga & Ayurveda by David Frawley – An expert in Ayurveda, Frawley outlines the difference between Self-healing (the science and medicine of Ayurveda) and Self-remembrance (the practices of Yoga).
If you want some hope and contemplation
The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks – A book of poetry that shines a light on the little things that make life so rich and beautiful.
Inward by Yung Pueblo – A contemporary poet, meditator and speaker who put together a collection of poetry and prose that explores the journey from self-love to unconditional love, the power of letting go, and the wisdom that comes when we truly know ourselves.
Accompany your reading with a few classes of yoga a week to practice your learnings.
