What’s your favourite sound that calms you down instantly? Perhaps it’s ocean waves crashing onshore. Or the sound of rain on the roof. You arrive at this total bliss state – just by listening to pure sounds. Now, imagine lying on your mat, embarking on a healing journey of sound through space and time and leaving you in the same bliss state of clam and utter relaxation. We give you the scoop what sound healing is and why it’s the new wellness trend in the new decade.
Power Living recently hosted sold-out events with East Forest on his epic Ceremony Tour. It was a journey like no other. In case you missed it, we have one very exciting sound healing event with The Gong Guru coming up.
What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing has been used in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. It’s a practice that uses vibration, which can be vocal or instrumental with gongs or Tibetan singing bowls or any other tool, to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance.
For all the nerds out there, let’s go a bit deeper into what occurs. The sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronises our fluctuating brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwave can attune to. By using rhythm and frequency, we can entrain our brainwaves, and it then becomes possible to down-shift our normal beta state (which is the normal waking level of consciousness) to alpha – our relaxed consciousness. We can even reach theta (the meditative) states or delta (which is sleep) where internal healing can occur. This same concept is utilised in meditation by regulating the breath, but with the sound, it’s the frequency that is the agent which influences the shift, not the breath.
In a nutshell, a sound healing session can leave you in a state of utter bliss and relaxation by letting your body and mind completely relax.
What to expect from Sound Healing?
A sound healing session is both a passive and participatory experience. The passive aspect is that you become more relaxed by sitting or laying down and slowing your breath. By doing this, you prepare yourself to become the receiver of sound. It’s in this place of stillness that you participate by becoming more aware of each sound that comes in. Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation.
Sound healing sessions vary from just 15 minutes to several hours and can take place on your own with headphones or in a studio with other people. But regardless of time and place, the effect can be the same — a general feeling of relaxation and contentment.
Some people find sound healing less challenging than meditation, as the sound keeps their mind occupied, making it easier to enter deep states of calm. Using sound as therapy can provide benefits for a variety of issues including sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, stress and pain management, to name a few. And although it hasn’t been categorically scientifically proven that sound healing heals anything, given our hectic lifestyles and need to calm down, anything that helps us relax is undeniably powerful.
